Temple tour - Chikka Tirupathi and Koti Lingeshwara

Updated: Apr 18, 2020

Why Chikka Tirupathi ?? Abhayahasta Perumal !! Short and Peaceful drive !!

Why Koti Lingheshwara ?? 1 Crore Lingas in a single temple !!

This weekend we had our Aunt visiting us , so we had to take her out but we could not plan for our usual adventurous trips or trekking trips with her so we decided to do a small temple tour road trip not very far from Bangalore.

The Drive - Chikka Tirupathi

The drive from Bangalore to Chikka Tirupathi was a very pleasant one with small but good roads, passing through small villages and fields along the Gunjur Magalur road.

With just about 18kms from Bangalore , we reached the place in no time.

Chikka Tirupathi

Chikka Tirupathi is a small dravidian style temple built a few centuries back. The main attraction is the deity himself , Lord Venkateshwara here is "Abayahasta" as the blessing hand points upward, unlike in Tirupathi where the blessing hand points downwards.

Its a small and peaceful temple to visit in a short drive when you have some elderly person

or temple lovers at your home.

The Drive - Koti Lingeshwara

We drove upto Chikka Tirupathi , it was a pleasant day we might as well drive a few more kms to Kotilingeshwara temple. Kotinlingeshwara is appx 55 kms from Chikka Tirupathi.

The drive was good for first few kms , the roads were small but good. Both sides covered with flower fields - Rose fields , Marigold flower fields , Mango trees. We stopped a bunch of times to enjoy the view and click some pictures. Not a scene we often see when staying in a busy City !!!

As we continued the drive the roads started getting bad , passing through several villages.

The roads were muddy and at places filled with small pits which made it a bit of a roller coaster ride.

Koti Lingeshwara

After a few kms of ups and downs :D we reached the Koti Lingeshwara temple.

The temple complex consists of 1 Crore Lingas and small temples for deities Brahma , Vishnu , Shiva , Annapurna Devi , Ayyappa and Shani Bagwan.

It is a sight to behold seeing so many Lingas in a single place - small , big , tall , short you can find Lingas in all shapes and sizes. The temple proudly houses the largest Lingam in India.

The story goes like this "Bhakta Manjunatha" who was born in this locality few centuries ago , used to insult Lord Shiva. He is said to have insulted Lord Shiva ten million times and in order to acquit his past sins he had decided to create ten million Lingas.

After offering our prayers and soaking in the view , this time we decided to take the route with the National highways to avoid bumpy roads. The drive was bumpy until we hit the National Highway.

These two places are close to Bangalore if you are planning for a devotional trip with the family from Bangalore. Its a good excuse to get out of the city for a day.
